In physical education, game development is very important. With elementary school kids I designed a game where students would protect their own pin while trying to knock down other opponents bowling pins. In this game students had to throw underhand and use strategies and tactics to protect and attack in this game which meet SHAPE sub standards of standard 1 and 2. There was no elimination in this game and when their pins were knocked over they would go out and when another student was knocked out they would come back in. Students would only be out for seconds at a time and would find a new spot to be at which got them involved with all students. Students got their heart rates up while also applying psychomotor, cognitive, and affective skills.

In the game of disc golf, middle school students had to apply concepts of scoring/math, strategy, and the physical ability of how to throw a disc as they went around a designed course. Students had to walk a large field so it helped them with cardiovascular fitness and they needed to use their brain and cognitive function to keep track of scores in a cross curricular fashion. In a game that can be very individual, modifications can be made to make it into a team game where students can choose who's disc to play from after they all throw in a game of best disc. The scorecards can also be used as a great assessment tool to see how well students are performing and who made need additional help.

With a jump roping unit I was able to teach elementary school students about muscular endurance and cardiovascular endurance. It is also a great tool to teach students rhythm and using their body in a specific and coordinated manner. Fitness was a big component of this and I would have students read their heart rate by finding their own pulse because we did not have heart rate monitors. This was a great way to get students to persevere and learn how their bodies work.

Students at an elementary level are constantly changing and figuring out how the world around them works. What to say, what to do, interactions with their environment, etc. With a floor hockey unit I was able to able these different curiosities. Students were able to see how force and speed affected an object, how different objects moved when hit, and also what behaviors are allowed and not allowed in the game. Field hockey can be frustrating, especially when someone bumps into you. This gave opportunities to teach students about their changing bodies and size differences so they could be more aware of their bodies as well as their environments.

With juggling there are various skill levels. Being able to give opportunities for all students to be successful is key. I taught students step by step on how to juggle and it really made a difference for the kids. After the fist day I gave students more progression and choice on what tp work on to keep all students engaged and at their skill level zone. The last day students were able to apply their skills more at various stations and allowed students more choice to have fun and work on their skills.

Twitter is a big tool I use to educate myself on perspectives of physical education issues as well as spread awareness for them. PE is something that can change a kids life for the better and it is important to keep aware of that. This will help inspire others and also keep myself motivated. Like I said, physical education is key to longer, happier lives.
